Not lost in translation

RASMI, pronounced "ress- me"- So what does it mean? In Arabic, it has a double meaning. As a noun, it's "my drawing." As an adjective, it's "official."

Culturally relevant arts programming

I was at the Arab American Association this past week, meeting some of the amazing youth who might be potential artists with RASMI this summer.  When I asked if anyone had art programs at school, some nodded "yes." When I asked if they ever looked at Arab or Muslim art in those art classes, everyone nodded "no." Important to know ourselves, our histories and herstories.

RASMI is an arts workshop for Arab and Muslim youth in Brooklyn that will be happening this summer, 2013. A group of 12 teenagers will get a chance to discover new art from East and West, the streets and museums, and go through a safe fun process of making their own self-portraits of identity. The teens will get to show their work to the public in a final exhibition in August.
